Honey Boosts Endurance

I just love Natural Honey and Manuka honey and have personally been using it (manuka) for over 25 years; manuka honey has many great medicinal uses and particularly if you are in training, honey delivers a significant performance boost to athletes during strenuous exercise.

“Numerous studies have singled out carbohydrates as a critical nutrient in endurance exercise,” says principal investigator Richard Kreider of the University of Memphis Exercise and Sport Nutrition Laboratory.

The perfect running fuel, honey’s natural unrefined sugars are easily absorbed by the body. These simple carbohydrates are a great source of energy – in fact, honey was even used by runners in the Olympic Games in ancient Greece as an energy source.

The increased levels of carbohydrate in honey makes it a clinically proven option as a natural and stable energy boost for sports and endurance. The glucose in honey is absorbed by the body quickly and gives an immediate energy boost, whilst the fructose is absorbed more slowly providing sustained energy delivery.

Honey doesn’t need water added to it to be consumed like some conventional sports gels do, plus energy drinks and gels can contain artificial preservatives, colourings and sweeteners.

World Ironman Champion, Guy Leech also recommends natural carbohydrates to improve endurance performance.

Typically, sports such as cycling, marathon running, longer distance triathlon, cross-country skiing and endurance swimming benefit from carbohydrate loading.

Researchers found three to five tablespoons of honey reduced the time to complete a 64 km time trial by more than three minutes and improved cycling power by 6 per cent compared to a placebo. Honey takes around 15 minutes to get to the muscles.

If you use sweetener’s try using honey instead because honey contains sugar but unlike refined sugar, honey contains vitamins and minerals. If you eat too much sugar you tend to gain weight not only because of the calories but due to the lack of vitamins and minerals which are utilized in the body; the nutrients in honey are essential to dissolve fats and cholesterol.

If you find the price of Manuka honey is not in your budget, go get yourself some pure honey from your local hives and give it a try.
